The inertial system is designed for a measurement of parameters of angular and linear motion of a craft.
For this purpose in an inertial system the Schuler theorem is physically modelled, according to which a pendulum with a period of oscillation equal to 84.4 min, for any acceleration of the point of its suspension during motion along the Earth surface will not leave a position of equilibrium.
The inertial system represents a rather complicated and expensive gear of exact mechanics, the quality of functioning of which is in many respects determined by a technological level of manufacturing of components.
The mass of the equipment of an inertial system can be several dozens of kilograms, requiring power consumption of hundreds of watts.
Sometimes the no-platform principle of construction of an inertial system is preferred; however its realisation requires use of rather accomplished specialised digital calculators and does not remove all problems, connected with the need for high accuracy and reliability of measurements.
